Have you ever been sitting at your computer and wondered "Hmm. It would be great if there was some place online where I could store files and give people easy-to-follow links to access them."

Buddy, you are not alone. Although I'm sure there are multiple sites that let you do that, I use Dropbox. My friend Monkeyboy introduced me to it. It's free. Yes, it's free. For all you students/people on a tight budget, let me say it one more time. It's FREE. For 2GB of space, it's free. If you want more space than that, there's a monthly fee. It's not really for backing up the entire contents of your hard drive, but for little files, say a résumé or something, there you go.

Yes, you can just email your resume, but that would require you to 1) have it on you via some data storage device or 2) be at your machine where the file is located. You can access Dropbox from any computer with internet access! You can log onto the main site to retrieve your files when you're away from home.

There's an application-type thing that you download, but it's basically a folder that puts itself on your computer. Things you put in the folder show up in your dropbox.

It helped me out, so I'm passing it on to you.

Ratchet's Makeover

I had the grand idea of redoing my portfolio in three weeks. There wasn't much sleeping involved. This is Ratchet's new look. Younger, more fiery, and a lot less mummy wrappings. I'd much rather clean up this version of him than his earlier version. Shows what a year's worth of practice can do for you.

Did some expressions for Forest. Here is the initial sketch that I did in my sketchbook.

Then I got to thinking on how I could make this more awesome. So I cut out the ones that were lacking and focused on the juicy bits, which goes to show that the more drawings you do, the more choices you have. You have 10,000 bad drawings in you. Might as well get them all out right away. I'm getting there. So I took the faces and decided to add some body language to them. Here's what I got this round:

You know, it's really funny, but I find that every time I have to redo something (it got destroyed, deleted, or the first one wasn't up to par), the second one is always better. So keep at it, keep DOING it. That's the real hammer, ain't it? You have to keep DOING.

I am a bookworm. I love reading about stuff, and there are two kinds of people: the kind that learn by doing whatever it is they're learning about, and the kind that learn by reading about whatever they're learning about. The problem is that sometimes when you're a reader, all you do is read and you don't get enough experience. Likewise, if you learn by doing, you will have the experience, but you may not understand the fine print about why things work the way they do. The trick is predictable. For those of you like me who read like nuts about everything, use what you read and apply it to something. Do experiments, little projects. Just DO. And those of you that already do, read up and learn more about what you do. Balance both sides of the equation.

This is done with After Effects, Photoshop, and a little Flash. Animated in After Effects mostly, colored in Photoshop. Very, very fun.

Ratchet Maquette

I did this maquette some time ago. I liked how it came out. I painted the shadows on it, and the lighting of the set was off for all of them but the back view. I was happy for good pictures. I tried to put as many trinkets in this one, such as his earring and chain. His slingshot actually stretches. I had a ton of fun with this sucker.

So I've smoothed her out a bit. The wad of clay she's holding in her upraised hand is the beginning of her head. And yes, her arms are supposed to be that skinny. She's wearing a t-shirt, and whenever her bare skin shows (head, neck, arms, and hands in this case), you can only see her bones because her skin is completely invisible to most (99.99% of the population that has ever existed). Very few can see her skin and face.

I've been experimenting with the firm Super Sculpey, and despite my initial reaction to its hardness, it's not all that bad once it gets warm in your hand and, you know, starts acting like clay. I definitely like the gray tone of it more than the flesh color. It lets you really see where the bumps and ridges and stuff are. Another awesome thing about the firm stuff is that it doesn't seem to attract as many fingerprints, and since I use my fingers a lot in the sculpting process, that is a very good thing.

I need to get ahold of some wire mesh and a wooden rod for her scythe. Need to design the scythe too. The scythe originally belonged to the Grim Reaper, Death's father, but was passed to her as he retired and she took over the family business. I fought with the scythe idea for a while, because it's not something that Death actually uses very often. It was decided that it would help the maquette "read" as Death, so it's in.

I'm noticing that I tend to do the body and leave the maquette headless at first. I did this with Ratchet's maquette too.

Meet Death, daughter of the retired Grim Reaper and the oldest of the Four Horsemen of the Apocolypse. She's about as friendly as a forty-foot rattle snake with twice the charm. If you had to manage Hell and Purgatory as well as a small army of reapers, you'd be this way too.

I can't believe another year has passed. Time is a deceptive, little bugger, isn't it? It feels like it creeps by irritatingly slow, and then you look at your calendar and realize it's time to get a new one.

Self-Discipline - Doing the things you need to do when you need to do them whether you want to or not.

It's a simple statement, and we all know what it means and that we should do it, but it seems to take a back seat in most minds, mine included. But I've been listening to a lot of talks about self-discipline, and since then I play that over and over inside my head.

The only way you'll get better at anything is to spend time and practice, especially when you don't want to. Nowadays, I can't even play a video game without feeling that twinge of guilt clawing at my senses and growling, "You need to be working on something. Be productive!"

You exercise for health, and you practice sports to get better at them. One of the talks I listened to said that your career depends on how much work you do outside of work. Practicing and getting better at your craft on the outside of what you do for a paycheck is what will take you far in life. That's what I intend to do this year, get as much practice as I can stand. I can sleep when I'm dead.

Current project: a maquette for Death. I will be uploading progress shots of her.

So cheers for 2011 and productivity, learning, new opportunities, fantastic friends, and getting one step closer to my goals.

Here is a caricature I did of a fellow I know. I did the drawing in a cheapie blue ballpoint pen although I have no idea why. I normally don't draw in pen, but if it results in stuff that comes out as good as this, I may have to make it a rule. Colored in Photoshop.

Note to self: Next time draw with a black ballpoint pen.

So I found a really cool blog template online, something that matches my hat more. :D Anyway, it turns out, there's a glitch in the system involving the arranging of gadgets on the sidebar, so until it is fixed, make sure you don't forget to check out my Archive and Fun Sites. Venture Brothers - Character Design

This is Elk, a character I designed for an imaginary Venture Brothers episode. He is from Brock and Doc Venture's past. Going to the same college that everyone else in the series goes to, Elk is on the football team with Brock. He's a bit of a meathead, but that's why we love him. He's as gentle as a teddy bear for the most part although he doesn't really know his strength. On the gridiron, he's on the defensive line and is a ruthless, merciless fiend.

My professor said he looks like the love child of Hank and Sergeant Hatred, and I agree, considering that's the two people I merged together to make him. :D

Jormungandr: Storyboards

These are three pages of the storyboards for an episode of Jormungandr. Nick, the ship's sorcerer, isn't very good at being drunk. In the first panel shown here, Nick has just belched a stream of fire at the exact place that Ratchet was just sitting. With clever use of her tail, Lidona plucked him from his chair before he could get roasted.

Lidona is the one he's talking to that isn't Lojin. Lidona is a Jessin, a reptilian race, and her race has no need for breasts. This is why she looks like a man, and although Jessins have two sets of arms (if you've seen Lidona's toned-paper sketch elsewhere on here, you can see her other set of arms), the Captain makes her shapeshift one set away to avoid drawing unnecessary attention.

Dislikes: Lojin Espada, anyone messing with his hair

Interesting Fact: The massive tattoo on Ratchet's back is actually a hidden red cross and represents his involvement with an illegal (yet honorable) ring of physicians who provide health care to those who cannot afford it while stealing from the over-priced, "official" doctors and their sponsoring aristocrats. Think Robin Hood and his Merry Men only with stethoscopes.

Wastelanders

Hey all. In this online game I play, I was appointed as the kingdom designer, and my first job is to design a kingdom image. This is the initial sketch.

The top page is the overall composition for the image. The Leader or King is on the far right. His crown is a cowboy-hat looking thing with skulls, teeth, and claws all over it. There's a dragon skull on his shoulder. The Curser, second in command, is the figure standing right next to him. Initially, I drew him with a voodoo doll in his hand, but that seemed cheesy. Instead, on the second page, I began experimenting with shards. In game, you use shards to curse people anyway. I want the shard to have a skull-like image on one of its facets. Then to the immediate left of the Curser is the Carrier of Eggs. Powerful creatures are inside those eggs, and it's someone's job to protect and watch over the eggs for the benefit of the kingdom. In the lower left of the upper page is the Gem Enchanter. Behind the Gem Enchanter is a hound. Beyond those characters is one riding a dragon, one leaning on the dragon's wing, and one sitting on top of a golem's head. On the bottom page is a redrawing of the Carrier of Eggs as well as the Gem Enchanter. I didn't like the Gem Enchanter's pose in the upper page, so I reworked it.

The Curser doesn't like you. Be prepared for seven years' worth of agonizingly bad luck.

Ratchet vs. the Jatella

This is a pin-up I did for my Materials and Techniques class. I plan to color it later, so it gets put in the digital art section. Anyway, this is Ratchet Tomah, and he's a medic on the pirate ship Jormungand. The creatures he's fighting are Jatella. Remember how Jessins were water/darkness? Well, Jatella are air/darkness and also my creation. Most Jatella can fly, but some can't. Even though they're air creatures, they live underground. Jatella are supposed to have four arms like the Jessins, but I didn't draw those in here. I figured it would make the picture a little more complicated than I wanted it to be. Where Jessins are snake-like, Jatella are insectoid. They have hard armor plating on their backs and sides and have a tendency to walk on all fours, using only one pair of arms for support. And of course, all good pirate fights have to have a severed head in them.

Digging Around in the Sketchbook

I play this little fantasy game online, and I'm thinking about designing a profile image that looks something like this. I'm trying to go for crazy here...

Keyfish is something I tend to call my female characters when I haven't figured out a good name for them yet, and then I decided that Keyfish needed her own character. This is what Keyfish looks like as an adult. The black stripes in her hair are actually poisonous spines that she keeps pulled back along with the rest of her hair.

A younger version of Keyfish. At this particular story point, Keyfish has been driven insane by a curse. For mages, this mental imbalance is much more detrimental. It causes her magic element to begin to attach itself to her body in order to compensate for the imbalance. Basically, for Keyfish, a water mage, it makes her look more fishy.

I wanted to play around with facial proportions in this one, and I played around with shading the sketch.

Meet Lidona Kid, a Jessin. Jessins are of MY design and are a water/darkness race that live in the deepest, darkest crevices of the ocean, places where even the fish-humanoid Mers cannot survive. Jessins are very tall, seven to ten feet. They have four sets of arms, snack bodies for hair, and tails. They can also dislocate their jaws like a snake can, but it's mildly uncomfortable so they don't do it often. Being cold blooded, the females lay eggs, and because they lay eggs, they have no need for mammary glands. Lidona is a female, but to the humans and Mers that don't know her, she passes off as a male, although in her own species, it's rather obvious she's a woman. She is also a friend of Ratchet Tomah. In fact, he makes her the vest that she's wearing because he's somewhat offput by the fact that she's walking around without a shirt on. The arms in the sketch are a big wonky, but I still like it. :P

The Paper Mage

Hey guys,

After much turmoil and very little sleep, here is my senior project, The Paper Mage. It's a 2D/3D film, 2D and 3D animated components set in a 3D environment. It's the product of three animation classes at SCAD, Concept Development, Senior I, and Senior II, so ten weeks of concept design, ten weeks of asset and prop design, and ten weeks of animation. Dianna Bedell, my colorist, has been a godsend to me regarding this project. Let me know what you think about it, guys. Leave comments!

The Armament of Jesse Crow Character Sketches

I have a story plot going on mostly inside my head and sometimes in .txt files on my computer, and I only recently decided to call it The Armament of Jesse Crow.

It's about this fellow named Jesse Crow who has decided to become one of the Knights of the One Truth, a group of powerful men who represent something similar to police judges. They are powerful and aren't questioned, no matter what goes on. Over the years, this group has become corrupted, and Crow is going to set them straight by becoming a part of the group and working his way to a position of power. His best friend, Monta Raimon, a humanoid creature called a Sine that he has known all his life, supports him and is determined to follow him to the very end.

Unfortunately for him, there are very few ways to achieve that. One of which is to be hand-chosen by one of the Knights themselves in either an electing process or to take a Knight's place, and the other is to fight for the chance to become one of them through skill. Of course, Crow can only choose the second option and must participate in a specialized tournament where two parties are forced to fight until one side is dead or has given up. So, he, Monta, and a newly aquired friend Roland Eldir take part in this tournament and beyond.

Along the way, Jesse experiences the loss of his friends, the aquiring of new friends, the value of teamwork as well as the strength of one, his inner self.

There's a lot more to this, but I'll be on here talking forever if I sit and chat. Anyway, these tournaments require at least three people to fight on each team, at least three and up to ten. As Crow goes along, he gains people who are willing to fight for his dream. Monta Raimon, his best friend, is one of them, and so is Davit Lazra, shown here. They are two of seven that creates the crew that makes up Jesse's true armament, his friends.

Dice, Card, and Chip

Dice, Card, and Chip are three sibling characters of mine. Chip has yet to be drawn, but here's the scoop so far.

Dice is the youngest, seven or eight, and he's evil, self-centered, paranoid, and just your average someday-will-enslave-humanity type. He has a teddy bear that looks like it was owned by the ant-christ, sharp teeth, dark expression, and he's really fond of his little friend, dragging it around to the point of deterioration. (Chip is charged with the task of sewing it back together again.) His relationship with Card is somewhat rivalish, meaning he comes out on top sometimes, if not more, than she does. He is still trying to conquer Chip, however, but she almost always wins. He acts as if Chip is an annoyance, occassionally dealing with her bouts of affection, but he's really scheming about her demise. He also has a strange knack of finding very alien, super-advanced weapons of destruction lying around the house. Dice, at age 7, wears a shirt with two dice on them (the closest faces always add up to seven) and shorts. Socks and shoes a default. At any younger age, Dice is in overall shorts, but he still has the two dice on them. He usually has spikey hair and a very annoyed look on his face.

Card is the middle child, around twelve, and she's more or less always trying to protect herself from or get revenge on Dice. They get into fights more often than any other pairing of the three, and whenever their mom gets pulled into the mess, Dice always wins. In their disputes, Card almost always seems like she's going to win, but Dice tends to pull the rug out from under her at the last minute to claim victory. Card individually is very curious and inquisitive, the kind of child that likes taking things apart to see how they work. She likes to set traps for Dice. She wears jeans and a striped t-shirt. Shoes a default; can't see socks. Her hair is chin-length. Usually wide-eyed.

Chip is the oldest, well into her late teens if not twenty. Being the oldest, she always has the upper hand except for few times when Dice manages to out-maneuver her. She loves both her siblings, even showing Dice extreme affection when he's not being a little snot. He finds this very annoying. Chip and Card get along very well, and it's Chip that keeps the peace whenever all three of the siblings are together. She usually seems obliviously happy about things, but whenever Dice is up to his schemes, she shows us that she's really on top of everything going on. Chip is tall, a lot taller than either of the other siblings, and sometimes, whenever Dice is in the floor playing with his teddy bear, she is shown only as a pair of shoes jutting out of denim pants. Chip has long hair, and she's usually wearing a hoody, whether it's winter or summer outside. She's wide-eyed with a huge grin on her face.

Colored Comic Page

Hey, yall. New post. This is a comic page I colored for my Digital Coloring class. Note: I did not pencil or ink this page. I just COLORED it. This is not my artwork, just my coloring style. Anyway, got a good review on this bit. I didn't have halos, but Professor Woodard did have some helpful pointers for me. Anyway, I really liked this project. I liked this part more than the other portions of the project, so this gets posted. I think it's totally sweet, and I can only get better.

My Character Raylan

This is young Raylan. His older version is in the Forest Gods sketch. Raylan is a dryad, a plant. In his storyline, he's the best friend and future husband of the main character. After spending a lot of his childhood in a slave farm, his people buy him in order to train him to fulfill the needs of his people. Raylan is a special type of dryad that will eventually turn into a huge tree and merge his consciousness with nature.

And I am very proud of that hand...and his face...his entire head for that matter...

New Laptop

Got a new laptop today thanks to the wonderful support of my mother and Aunt Tressia. Thank you so much for helping me with this.

My old laptop is four years old, still a good ole bird, just old. Unfortunately for the Adobe Master Collection CS4, it was too old and just wasn't powerful enough to run hardly anything except the basic Microsoft Office programs. So the new model, a Sony FW Series, has plenty of space and RAM to run what I need it to run.

This summer will be filled with work. Lots and lots of glorious work. Just wait, yall. I'm going to be animating my tail off soon. So very, very soon...

Caster Style Frame

This is the initial style frame for Caster. Originally, I was going to have this texture jitter over the top of the animation, but eventually, I decided to remove that and go for more of a clean look. Also, Caster's character design has shifted just a bit from this one. He's reaching for a glowing, orange marble in his pocket.

Maloney Turtle Character

Meet Maloney Turtle. Yes, he doesn't like you, and he doesn't care that you don't like him. Your existance means nothing to Maloney Turtle. He can squash your head with his PINKY.

Okay, so this is a character I had to design for my Introduction to Sequential Art class. Basically, the assignment was to design a turtle so he can cross a street. Because I have a death wish, I design my turtle based on the scariest man I've ever met, Matthew Maloney, a professor at SCAD-Atlanta.

Fortunately for me, he likes it, so I get to live. I'll upload Maloney Turtle's comics later once I get the art scanned and de-blue lined.

Forest God Character Sketch

This guy is basically a dryad. Each being in this race is born with a mask covering his face, and throughout his life, he will take immaculate care of this mask.

Occassionally, a dryad will be born with two masks. This is considered as sign of good luck.

These masks sometimes possess strange, out-of-the-ordinary powers, such as cancelling out emotions when worn. No fear, no sadness, no happiness, nothing like that. Just there. Most of the time, though, they are simply masks that provide a deep spiritual connection to their dryad owners.

Did I mention that I write a lot? I guess not. Well, I write. A lot. A LOT. So if you find little tidbits of ideas here and there that make no sense, just bear with me.

Wine Horn

This has to be my favorite drawing that came out of Life Drawing I. Ever since I first saw this wine horn on another student's drawing, I wanted to draw it in something I did. Finally, I had the chance to, and I loved it. Unfortunately for me, we had a time constriction on this piece. The wine horn looks awesome, but the rest of it...not as awesome. I cropped it in order to put more emphasis on my focal point.

Oh, and at first, I didn't know it was a wine horn. The tip of the horn is open, and one would pour wine into the mouth of it and pass it around the room. You couldn't put it down until all the wine had been consumed.

This was really fun to draw.

Birth of the Watermark

So I finally made my watermark, which makes me feel a lot better about putting stuff online. Believe it or not, the "keyfish" image of the watermark is actually a tattoo on the back of my left shoulder. It's my only tattoo, and I designed it. I'm pretty proud of it. Probably going to revise the image to put on a business card later on.

As for the drawings I've been putting up, let me take time to explain what they are. The studies from George Bridgman's book are just that, studies. They are my sketches but not my source images. Just me trying to learn. Learning is good.

And I'm planning on putting a lot of sketchbook pages in here even if they aren't finished. Sketches are interesting to look at, sometimes even more so than the final piece, know what I mean?

I'm probably going to put up other stuff too, not exactly stuff that pertains to my major or desired area of expertise, but things that I have done in the past that I think are cool. Photographs and sculpture projects and such.

The Paper Mage

This little boy is the main character of my senior film. He's got an interesting ability that allowed him to bring anything made out of paper to life, and it proves useful in his search for a friend.
